Berries

I love smoothies berry much (:)). Sorry I had to do it, but in all seriousness berries are kind of amazing. They are also an amazingly healthy ingredient to add to your smoothies.

There is something about a cold, healthy smoothie delivering a ton of nutrients that makes me blend up one every morning. One way to make sure that you get plenty of healthy nutrients is to throw some berries in.

According to a Healthline article on Why Berries are Among the Healthiest Foods on Earth they are not only packed with nutrients, antioxidants and fiber but they also help improve blood sugar and insulin levels, may help to lower cholesterol levels, help fight inflammation, etc.

Frozen blueberries are great as they make your smoothie cold. Buy a bag of frozen blueberries or throw a container of fresh blueberries in the freezer.

Chia Seeds

Don’t chia wish you had a smoothie right now?

Chia seeds not only play a helpful role in thickening your smoothie so it isn’t a watery mess, but they are also an amazingly healthy ingredient for your smoothies.

According to an article by Vegetarian Times “they’re the richest vegetable source of essential omega-3 fatty acids.” If you are vegan and trying to get your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids then adding 2-3 tbsp of chia seeds to a smoothie is an easy way to help you accomplish that.

They also account for about 25% of your daily fiber and very high in soluble fiber, which helps you feel fuller for longer.

Lastly, chia seeds efficiently deliver ~8g of protein in just 2 tbsp. If you need higher levels of protein then be sure to check out our list of the 8 best vegan protein sources.

Chia seeds are sold as whole seeds. Just add 1-2 tbsp into your blender. If you have never eaten them before and have a diet lower in fiber we strongly recommend starting out with 1 tbsp as they tend to promote bowel regularity.

If you want a super thick smoothie chia seeds will help with that. Just add the chia seeds, blend it up and let it sit for 10 minutes or so. Make sure you put some extra liquid in the blender though as you might end up with a consistency more like pudding if not.

Flaxseed Meal

Flaxseeds are another great healthy ingredient for your smoothies. They are a low calorie, low carbohydrate way to take in a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin B, etc. They also have a good amount of lignans, a beneficial antioxidant.

Like chia seeds they also help to thicken smoothies. This is an added benefit for those who don’t like watery smoothies.

Use flaxseed in its meal vs. it’s seed form. This will deliver the most nutrients. Keep flaxseed in your fridge and throw a few tablespoons into your blender. Make sure you add a bit of extra liquid as, like chia seeds, the flax will suck it up.

Turmeric Root or Powder

Turmeric has a bright yellow color that gives life and beauty to curries amongst other recipes. It makes our list because it is an anti-oxidant that provides anti-inflammatory benefits. This is helpful for those with inflammation conditions, such as arthritis. Personally as someone who has rheumatoid arthritis this is important to me.

According to an Everyday Health article, turmeric may protect against heart disease, helps to prevent cancer and diabetes, delay alzheimer’s disease, acts as an anti-depressant, helps to improve your skin health, etc.

Turmeric powder can easily be thrown into your blender.

According to this article on the benefits of turmeric by Well + Good you need to get about 500 – 1,000 mg of curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, a day. There are about 200 mg per 1 teaspoon of curcumin so adding 1 tbsp to your smoothie is probably adequate.

It is also important to note that your daily dose of turmeric doesn’t need to be consumed in your smoothie alone. It is a great spice to add to recipes as it doesn’t have a strong flavor. Using it with black pepper increases the absorption of it in the body.

Raw Cacao Powder

Okay, this one is just as delicious as it healthy, which is why it makes our list of healthy smoothie ingredients. Cacao powder in its raw form is pretty bitter, but when its mixed with natural sugars or plant-based sugar substitutes it tastes great!

The reason why it makes our list of healthy ingredients for smoothies is because its packed with antioxidants, nutrients, favanols, etc.

According to Be Good Organics, raw cacao powder is a superfood that has 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries, is the highest plant-based source of iron, has more calcium than cow’s milk, is full of magnesium, etc.

Add a few tablespoons into your blender. Compliment it with naturally sweet fruits, such as berries and bananas. It’s as easy as that.

An additional Ingredient to Consider

Spinach

There has to be a reason why Popeye ate so much spinach. This healthy ingredient is low in calories but packed with a long list of nutrients, antioxidants, and omega-3’s. It also delivers dietary fibre and some protein.

Adding spinach to your smoothie is easiest with raw spinach, but as we discuss below this may not be the healthiest way to add it.

Even though spinach has many benefits it does come with a caveat. Raw spinach has harmful bacteria on the surface, which is true even if the package says it is pre-washed or triple washed.

The healthiest way to consume spinach is cooked. This means if you want to add spinach to your smoothie we recommend cooking it the night before to remove the bacteria via boiling. Let it sit in the fridge overnight and then add it into your blender when cold.

Conclusion

All of these foods are super healthy ingredients for smoothies. They are not only delicious and complement each other flavor wise, but they are also really easy to add (except for cooked spinach). Pick them up at the store and start reaping their health benefits!
